ALL ABOUT VODKA

Many love vodka for its neutral spirit with a clean, crisp flavor. Vodka's unique characteristics allow it to be distilled to a high proof, filtered with charcoal to give it that distinctive taste. Vodka's flavor profile, often described as tasting "clean" or "neutral", gives it versatility that can be enjoyed in many different ways.

History

The word Vodka means water in Russian and was used by the Polish to refer to any white distilled drink. Vodka originated in Russia and Eastern Europe more than a thousand years ago. Originally, producers created a very low-quality product until the accession of Empress Catherine II. Under her reign, nobles could now produce liquor on their estates. In one of these small factories, they invented a purifying method using charcoal. This transformed the drink into one of crystalline purity of the highest quality.

How Vodka is Made

Through distillation methods, vodka producers remove impurities from the liquid, resulting in a clean, flavorless spirit. Distillers usually make it from grain or potatoes, but it can also be made from fruit or other sugary liquids. It usually contains between 35% and 50% alcohol by volume (70 to 100 proof). To make vodka, first ferment the grain or potato mash. This process converts the starch in the grain or potatoes into sugar, which is then converted into alcohol. Distillers then place the mash in a still and heat it until the alcohol vapors begin to rise. These vapors then condense back into a liquid before being collected, bottled, and enjoyed.

Types of

  • Potato Vodka - First, distillers mash the potatoes. After letting them sit, they are distilled to create a vodka without strong flavors. Because of its mild nature, this is the type of vodka used in many popular cocktails.
  • Grain Vodka - Distillers create this vodka from a variety of grains including wheat, rye and barley. It goes through an additional distillation process to remove any trace flavors that may be present in the alcohol content. Many consider grain vodkas to be smoother than potato vodkas.
  • Fruit Vodka - Distillers create fruit vodkas by using various fruits, such as apples and pears. Each type produces its own unique flavor profile that can be determined based on what grain was used in production.

WHAT DOES VODKA TASTE LIKE?

Vodka is not necessarily tasteless or odorless, and there are distinct differences between vodkas. Vodka flavor comes through subtly and often, like a clear grain. If you taste enough vodka of a great variety, you will begin to pick up the differences. Aficionados measure the smoothness of a vodka by various factors including its heat, also called "the burn". This sensation can be felt on both your tongue and throat when drinking it straight. More distillations performed with careful filtering techniques throughout the production process lead towards a less intense burn, which makes these vodkas feel smoother overall.

How to Drink Vodka

For centuries people have enjoyed vodka, and there are many ways to enhance that experience. Some people insist on drinking straight from the bottle, while others like chilling down their favorite drink with ice before blending in some fresh fruit for that perfect flavor. You can also shake up vodkas into cocktails with ice or mix some water in before straining it into an old-fashioned glass for an extra special flavor.
